Letter to Deej

by Ed Cole

/
  • Cassette + Digital Album

It's a cassette with 13 songs on it. Written during June and July, 2021 as a letter to my friend Dan Jones and recorded on cassette, especially designed to listen to on cassette - it's a diary of life on the outside of a pandemic, during a heatwave, with the events of my family and my community documented as God intended - on a fucking cassette. The cassette itself is blue with a white label and a photo-copied cover on colored cardstock. Comes with a download code so you can also listen digitally, but really it's designed to be listened to on cassette, so why would you even want that? If I make any money on this, I will buy more blank tapes and do the exact same thing again sometime down the line. $10 post-paid in the USA.

Includes unlimited streaming of Letter to Deej via the free Bandcamp app, plus high-quality download in MP3, FLAC and more.

Dear Dan 03:05
Dear Dan I'm writing you a letter, I hope you don't mind. I'm holding it together most of the time. Things can get hectic when the hens come home to roost - sometimes they give eggs, sometimes they start to brood. I've been running in the park, dodging frisbees and religious pamphlets. Listening to some Faith no More, We care a Lot and that one called Anne's Song. The family's doing okay, the kids are finishing school, me and Tina working away, trying to stay cool. The yard is looking nice, we got the floors done, we all got our shots and we're ready for fun. I think this summer is going to be one to remember. Gonna camp in the woods on mushrooms and find some new constellations. Listening to old tapes on a walkman I just bought, on a 9 volt rampage - good times never sounded so hot, so point your telescope back in my direction - can you look in my eye and see your own reflection? Now I'm waving bye bye to you and your friends. Tell Tracy hi until I see you again. I think this summer is gonna be one to remember. Gonna point my telescope right at the moons of Jupiter.

Colonoscopy 04:05
Colonoscopy, colonoscopy. First you drink the green stuff, then you drink the grey stuff, feel the rumble in the tumble. Now, lock yourself away in the bathroom - it's gonna be a blast. Go tell your family to eat without, you can't do it, you can't do it. You can only eat Jello and other clear liquids that don't disguise your poo. No solid foods, no solid foods, no nothing that clogs your tubes. Oh, so hungry, oh so hungry, make no mistake - you gotta be ready, for the robot snake. Now down, under sedation, enjoy your drugs, it's a mid-week vacation, swimming in the sea, swimming in a dream, a magical submarine. When you awake, make no mistake, you hope they've nothing, nothing to tell you. Hope you brought a ride, 'cuz you surely can't drive, but once you get home, you can eat what you want to.

The old age has passed away / a new dawn, dark new days / bad thoughts, no one cares / black spray paint and sticky hair / no one knows here I got my clothes / I'm sorry buddy but that store is closed / No man, we don't smoke reefer, we only smoke cloves / New Wave Kids, embrace the madness, of the future of the night / And we dance like we're having convulsions / Black flowers and funeral rites / We don't come out til the sun has disappeared / but once we do we own the night / Hold back, hold back, don't be normal / don't give in to conformity / We won't live / in your structure / we have the power / to be free

Tina is concerned with laughing a lot, making good food and living life on top. Tina works hard at her restaurant job, service with a smile even if it's to the mob. Tina with the sparkling smile, Tina with the sparkling smile. When she does karaoke with her crazy friends, they break all the rules and stay past the end. She takes care of business and sleeps like a log until the sun is shining and the coffee's back on. Tina with the sparkling smile, Tina with the sparkling smile. She waters flowers in her pink underwear and she'll spray you with a hose if you get fresh up in there. Some people like life well she loves it double, life of the party, the bringer of trouble. She keeps her people close, she ain't afraid of nothing, she always dreams of food she'd rather be eatin.

The Chickens 02:57
They came to us as balls of fluff, from the feed and seed up on 164th. Under a heat lamp, in a box in the garage, they became the birds that stole my hear. I love chickens. Pika she's the spotted one, a friendly Barred Rock. Judt she's a Blue Moran, who likes worms and spiders. Griffin's always riffin, 'cuz she's Americana, and Linda the Leghorn is the queen of the flock. We built them a coop out of pallets and old lumber. We feed 'em compost and freeze-dried grub worms. We get lots of eggs, four different colors. And we boil 'em all and feed 'em to each other.

Goin to the river on the hottest day of the year / I got a bog full of sandwiches a cooler full of beer / the kids are amped, changing their suits in the car / peein in the bushes and packing it down the trail / I hope we get a spot over by the log / Goin to the river on the hottest day of the year / Can you touch the bottom, can I borrow your mask? / I found a pair of glasses, I found a piece of glass / Some people flipped their raft, going through the rapids too fast / Now they're laying out their cell phones and sandwiches on the grass / I guess it's crazy being part of this crowd / but we gotta get out somehow / Goin to the river on the hottest day of the year / They say the planet's heating up, I wish we didn't have to drive / Yet, we're doing what we can, trying to keep the world alive / The kids are jumpin in, flopping around like trout / Makes me remember what life is all about / Some guys are playing Pacific-Islander rap / and on the grill, they're cookin their crab / Goin to the river on the hottest day of the year / Every where I go, burnin my feet on the sand / Now, I'm swimmin in my flip-flops, looking for a dry patch of land / Dodging all the dog crap, picking up garbage and sticks / Yeah, we all llive in the country, but none of us seem like hicks / We're all sweatin on this crazy day /Tryin to find some shade / Goin to the river on the hottest day of the year

Everybody's chasin the highs / I find myself chasin the lows / getting hyped for nothing / but a bowl of Cheerios / Everyone's drinkin their mountain juice / and shootin their guns into space / fallin asleep at the wheel / on some desert highway / Payin too much for cheap nostalgia / drinkin straight from the hose / Waiting for the bars to open / til then I'll just be chasin the lows / Everyone's tryin to change themselves / update for the modern age / they appear to be havin fun / but their mind's kept in a cage / Everyone's headin somewhere / I just wanna see where this goes / sleepin in the yard, playin guitar / wiping the bugs off my nose / Jumpin the fence, lookin for something better / than waitin round for death I suppose / countin lucky charms / stayin away from harm / til then I'll just be chasin the lows / Tryin to escape the present / dreamin of the time before / headnig for an unclear future / til then I'll just be chasin the lows
